Hygiene and make-up brushes

Cleaning your make up brushes

I clean my brushes after every booking to ensure my kit is always hygienic but many of my clients admit to rarely cleaning theirs!

I created this video with Rona Wheeldon to discuss the Why, When and How of cleaning your brushes!  https://linktw.in/7EBZu2  I have also filmed other make-up videos with her …..  www.mymidlifestory.com

Why should you clean your brushes?

The short answer is because they touch your face (and so can spread germs and bacteria), they perform better when clean and they will last many, many years if you look after them.

How often should you wash them?

I would suggest the same frequency that you wash your face towels or pillow cases.  Brushes used for liquid/creme make-up- ie foundation/ lip brushes will start to clog up much sooner than powder brushes.

What’s the best way to clean make-up brushes?

For a quick clean in between deep cleaning, use a brush cleaning spray (which is usually an alcohol based formula) to spritz the synthetic brush hairs and wipe onto a cloth. Repeat until the brushes wipe clean.  For natural brush hairs avoid using alcohol based cleanser as it can damage the hairs.

For a deep clean wash the brushes. This does take a few minutes but it’s worth taking your time, being gentle and thorough for the best results. Over the years I have tried many, often pricey, brush cleaners but I always come back to washing up liquid and tepid water. Lather up the brush hairs holding the brushes pointing down so that the glue holding the bristles in place doesn’t get saturated, rinse until clean.  Pinch the excess water from the hairs and lay flat on a towel to dry overnight.

They will be soft and fluffy again in the morning and your skin will thank you for it!
